Introduction
My name is Mulrajsinh Gohil, and I am pursuing M.A. in English Literature at the Department of English, Maharaja Krishnakumarsinhji Bhavnagar University, Bhavnagar, Gujarat.
As a postgraduate student of English Literature, I believe that cinema is not only a form of entertainment but also an important medium for understanding literature, mythology, history, and culture. As part of our academic curriculum, our respected Head of the Department, Dr. Dilip Barad Sir, assigned us the task of watching Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey and writing a review in the form of a blog by connecting our personal viewing experience with concepts from Literature and Film Studies.
I watched the film at Entertainment Park, Bhavnagar, on Friday, 17 July 2026, during the 10:00 AM show along with my classmates, professors, and friends from the Department of English. This theatre visit was both enjoyable and educational, as it gave us an opportunity to experience a cinematic adaptation of a classical literary masterpiece and discuss it from a literary perspective.

One of the best parts of this academic activity was watching the film with our entire group from the Department of English. We also took group photographs inside and outside the theatre to remember this wonderful learning experience. The visit allowed us to combine classroom learning with practical exposure to film as a literary and cultural text.
About the Film
The Odyssey is directed by Christopher Nolan and is based on Homer's ancient Greek epic, The Odyssey. The story follows the long and difficult journey of Odysseus, the King of Ithaca, as he tries to return home after the Trojan War. During his journey, he encounters powerful gods, mythical creatures, dangerous islands, storms, and numerous challenges that test his courage, intelligence, and determination.
Christopher Nolan presents this timeless story on a grand cinematic scale, combining mythology, history, adventure, action, and emotional storytelling.
Understanding Greek Mythology Before Watching
One thing I realized while watching the film is that having a basic understanding of Greek mythology is very important. The film includes many references to ancient Greek gods, heroes, monsters, and legendary events. Without knowing this background, many scenes may seem confusing, and the audience may not fully understand the significance of the characters or their actions.
Therefore, I believe that reading about Greek mythology or at least knowing the basic story of Homer's The Odyssey before watching the film makes the experience much more meaningful.
My Personal Experience
Personally, I liked the movie.
Christopher Nolan has beautifully recreated the ancient world through outstanding cinematography, visual effects, background music, costumes, and production design. Every scene looks visually impressive and demonstrates the director's attention to detail.
However, I also felt that the film contains a large number of fighting scenes. Although these action sequences are technically brilliant, they sometimes become repetitive and slightly reduce the emotional depth of the story. At certain moments, I wished the film had focused more on the characters' emotions and relationships rather than continuous battles.
Nevertheless, the film remains visually spectacular and successfully captures the grandeur of the original epic.
Literature and Film Studies Perspective
As a student of English Literature, I naturally connected the film with what we study in our classroom.
The film is an excellent example of how a classical literary text can be transformed into a modern cinematic experience. Homer's The Odyssey has influenced literature for centuries, and Christopher Nolan's adaptation demonstrates how ancient stories continue to inspire contemporary filmmakers.
The film explores universal themes such as heroism, fate, loyalty, courage, perseverance, sacrifice, identity, and the desire to return home. These themes remain relevant even in the modern world.
Watching this adaptation also helped me understand how literature and cinema complement each other. While literature allows readers to imagine the story, cinema presents those ideas through visuals, sound, and performance.
What I Liked

What Could Have Been Better
For me, the only major drawback was the large number of action and fighting sequences. Some scenes felt longer than necessary and slightly affected the pace of the narrative. A better balance between action and emotional storytelling could have made the film even more engaging.
Conclusion
Overall, I enjoyed watching Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey. It is a visually magnificent adaptation of one of the greatest literary epics in world history. The film successfully brings Greek mythology to life through modern filmmaking techniques while maintaining the spirit of Homer's classic work.
I strongly believe that viewers should have some knowledge of Greek mythology before watching the film because it helps in understanding the story, characters, and symbolism more effectively.
For students of literature, mythology, history, and film studies, this film offers both entertainment and valuable academic insight into the relationship between classical literature and contemporary cinema.
